Synopsis:
Re-imagining the conservation conversation through questions asked by a young girl. Remember when you were young? Did you play outside? Did you explore? What makes you remember? World Wildlife Fund and Natural Habitat Adventures have teamed up with Maser Films, Pongo Media and King Tide Motion Pictures to remind us all why nature is worth protecting.

Filmmaker Q & A

What inspired this story?
Conservation messaging is frequently convoluted and heavy, causing audiences to become numb and skeptical.  We take a different approach with Remember When?   We celebrate the primal joy that everyone feels for wild places, creatures and adventures.  Through a child experiencing the arctic region and polar bears for the first time, we hope to send a message that transcends politics to help instill a wide appreciation for the arctic region.
Describe some of the challenges faced while making this film
It's difficult to tell a new story about one of the most iconic species: the polar bear.  It is also challenging to tell a story filled with mostly negatives in a way that makes people hopeful and want to act.

What impact do you hope this film will have?
The goal of this film is to bring back the magic of wild places, wilderness and wild experiences, the wonder and innocence of youth.  It’s also to present a subtle conservation message:  Global warming is affecting our polar regions and the most iconic indicator of that change is the polar bear. As we perpetuate climate change through our actions at home, we make it harder for polar bears to survive.  This film is intended to affect audiences on a more visceral level.

How do you approach science storytelling?
Science storytelling is an exercise in translation.   Our goal has been to reach beyond the choir by using characters that are easy to relate to for the largest audience possible.  In Remember When we chose to have our main character be an 11 year old girl with the hopes that the viewer will relate to this character because they once were an 11 year old girl, have an eleven year old girl as their own or in their lives.   Finally once you can see yourself in the characters shoes or have a vested interest in her journey, then we work hard to take the viewer on a journey - often to the far reaches of the globe - to share stories that will inspire care, fierce need to help protect our fragile planet and a desire to act.

Were there any surprising or meaningful moments/experiences you want to
Having been lucky enough to film in exotic locations with majestic animals, I was surprised that none of us were prepared for just how awe-inspiring polar bears are in person.  We may have missed a few shots just because we were overcome by their presence, and had to remember we were there to capture images, not just revel in the presence of this magical beast.
