 LIVE from Jackson Sessions

Storytelling as Privilege:
Advancing Inclusivity and Equity in Wildlife Media

Session produced by Gina Papabeis and Moderated by Colleen Thurston
We know the power of storytelling to inspire wonder and create positive change for our natural world. But, who decides what stories are told? Who gets to tell them? Who do they reach? Addressing these questions is essential to inviting a broader, more diverse audience to experience and advocate for nature. This discussion will demonstrate the importance of inclusivity and equity at every step of the impact media pipeline, explore how advancing social justice within our field can lead to better wildlife conservation, and offer practical insights from those on the front lines of equitable progress.

Transformational Leadership in Storytelling

Sponsored by Heidrick & Struggles
Our panelists will talk about how they are accelerating efforts to restore our global ecosystem through transformational leadership and storytelling. Transformational leadership is a leadership approach that causes change in individuals and social systems. In its ideal form, it creates valuable and positive change in the followers with the end goal of developing followers into leaders. Storytelling is a key leadership technique in transformational leadership because it’s quick, powerful, free, natural, refreshing, energizing, collaborative, persuasive, holistic, entertaining, moving, memorable and authentic. Stories help us make sense of a leader’s vision and how to support their plan of action. Moreover, storytelling is more than an essential set of tools to inspire followers: it’s a way for leaders – wherever they may sit – to embody the change they seek.

Yet academics are making major breakthroughs in social science that can teach us how media moves people to action and drives impact. This panel looks at how we as filmmakers and media producers can integrate the latest research-driven insights so that our projects inspire our audiences and create the change we imagine.

TikTok as a tool to increase engagement and enact social change

Session producer: Alex Dainis
Short form social video is a powerful tool for reaching audiences. Videos can reach millions of viewers and garner thousands of interactions in days. Institutions and individual creators alike are using platforms like TikTok not only for promotion of larger projects but also to drive activism and build audiences. The fast-paced platform and low barrier for production allows for near-real time connection with viewers. Panelists will talk about how community-building has allowed for real world social change in the activism space and enhanced engagement with programming and institutions. Content best practices for producers trying to break onto the platform and the importance for considering social content creation during project development phases will also be discussed.

Collaborative Storytelling - Creating a New Model for a More Inclusive Industry

Session producer: Sarah Joseph
More and more, commissioners and storytellers are recognizing the importance of inclusive and collaborative storytelling, but what does that look like in practice? We’ll learn about the challenges and opportunities of working hand in hand with local communities from those who are at the forefront of reimagining our industry.
